| Steadily
over the last decade, Timbaland has become one
of the most influential and sought-after producers
and songwriters. His instantly recognizable beats
and rhymes are the magic ingredients in many dynamic,
chart-topping songs, and his recipe for groundbreaking
hits earned him Billboard’s Producer of
the Year Award in 2000. His skills have bolstered
the careers of multi-platinum artists like Ginuwine,
Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Nas, Justin Timberlake,
Ludacris and Jay-Z, and as a result, Tim’s
incredibly innovative music has changed the way
we look at and listen to popular music today.
Tonight, ASCAP honors Timbaland with the Rhythm
and Soul Songwriter of the Year Award for penning
and composing the most winning songs: Aaliyah’s
"More Than a Woman," and "I Care
4 U," Tweet’s "Oops (Oh My)"
and Missy Elliott’s "Work It,"
which dominated the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart
at No. 1 for 12 weeks and the Hot R&B/Hip
Hop Singles chart at No. 1 for 5 weeks.
With his eyes and ears pointed towards the future,
Tim constantly strives for originality and is
unafraid to experiment with unusual sound effects
and beats. In other words, he enjoys going where
no producer or songwriter has gone before –
a work mantra that keeps his music fresh, cutting
edge, and stuck in your head for weeks on end.
His latest joint, "The Jump Off," with
Lil’ Kim is a perfect example of his natural
infectious, hit-making abilities.
In 1997, Tim and his rapping partner Magoo also
carved out a name for themselves, debuting their
album, Welcome to Our World, and then
dropping their sophomore CD, Indecent Proposal,
in 2001. In between those two albums, Tim released
his solo effort, Tim’s Bio: Life From
Da Bassment, spotlighting his murmured rhymes
and stuttered beats.
With such a knack for bringing out the best in
singers and MC’s alike, it is no surprise
that Timbaland now also heads his own label, Beat
Club Records, nurturing more fledgling talent
like Bubba Sparxxx, Ms. Jade, and most recently
Kiley Dean, as he once did for Aaliyah.
Timbaland also executive produced the film 30
Years to Life and wrote much of the film’s
score. No stranger to the film world, his other
soundtrack credits include Romeo Must Die,
Nutty Professor II and Moulin Rouge.
Tim wins his second Rhythm and Soul Songwriter
of the Year Award this year after first being
honored in 2001. ASCAP congratulates this musical
mastermind on his many accomplishments, and we
look forward to what he will create in the years
to come.
