Youth Speaks

Youth Speaks

Brave New Voices Speak Green is an annual, national contest for spoken word artists ages 13-25. It was launched in 2005 by The Redford Center and Youth Speaks with the intention of inviting youth voices into the environmental dialogue and inspiring change through the poetry and courage of America's youth. The program includes a live competition and a traveling show. Participating poets depict a demographic representation of 21st century American youth—artists of different ages, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations, from urban centers, rural locations, and Native American lands. The seven artists performing are part of the Brave New Voices Speak Green – 2008/2009 Green Team, traveling to events throughout the country to speak out on how industrial pollution, environmental injustice and unhealthy, non-green communities affect them and the people in their lives.

"In some quarters, lurking beneath the exuberance of hope is deep anger--anger that may be ready to explode. That is the clear message of Youth Speaks, a group of young poets who performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington last week. They're full of idealism but they're also angry. And they're most angry about the environment…These young people aren't like Al Gore, ready to devote years to patiently persuading people of the rightness of their cause. They want action." - Timothy Shriver, from "Green With Anger," The Washington Post, July 21, 2008
