Neel Murgai is a multi-instrumental performer, composer and teacher. His main instrument is sitar, which he studies with Pundit Krishna Bhatt. Neel also plays frame drums, guitar and practices overtone singing. His music seem-lessly blends sounds across cultures and continents from around the world. His group the Neel Murgai Ensemble, plays a kind of Indo-chamber jazz that features sitar and tabla with viola and cello. Neel has worked with Bill T. Jones, Thurston Moore, Samir Chatterjee, Mat Maneri, Yeurba Buena, Pharaoh's Daughter, Loren Conners, Vijay Iyer, Akim Ndlovo, Mission on Mars and many others. He has composed music for dance, theater, TV and film including Manhattan Children's Theater, Dusara Dance, Morgon Kara, the BBC's "Holidays in the Danger Zone" and the documentary "Crossing Lines".
