Musical Theatre

The nominations are in for the 2012 Tony Awards, and ASCAP members can be found in almost every music-related category. Leading the pack is movie-turned-musical Once followed closely by Nice Work If You Can Get It and Porgy and Bess, among a number of other spectacular shows from the 2011-2012 season.

Four projects have been selected to participate in the annual workshop sponsored by the ASCAP Foundation. Stephen Schwartz will once again take the helm as the program's artistic director among an esteemed group of guest panelists.

Just one of the many initiatives planned for 2012, FNAM announces its First Annual National Search for the Best New Musical, making it the first competition of its kind geared toward high school and college-age composers.

The celebrated ASCAP composer, known for his music for A Chorus Line, The Sting and The Way We Were,will receive the first Legends Award from the non-profit CINE. The Award honors contributions to film or television that have become beloved and intrinsic elements of American popular culture.

Mark Winkler, a past participant of the ASCAP Foundation/Disney Musical Theatre Workshop, and Phillip Swann bring their new musical, Play it Cool, inspired by the jazz music of the 1950's, to New York City's Off-Broadway theatre, The Acorn Theatre, for its opening night on September 9th.

120 students from P.S. 212, the Midtown West Elementary School in Manhattan, received free orchestra level tickets to the Broadway matinee performance of Wicked as part of The ASCAP Foundation Children Will Listen program.

Sonhdeim won the PRS for Music Special International Award as the UK music industry gathered to honour the songs and their writers that made 2010 an amazing musical year.

Martin was the co-writer of numerous immortal songs of the stage and screen, including "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Trolley Song" from Meet Me In St. Louis. He continued writing and recording into his 90s.

Supporters of The ASCAP Foundation paid tribute to Stephen Sondheim at an intimate gathering held November 7, 2010 at the home of Academy Award-winning lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman in Beverly Hills, CA.
