Hit Man

JAY WARNER is one of the only music publishers to write extensively about the music business. The revised edition of his book, How to Have Your Hit Song Published, is essential reading for those seeking the right publisher

For three and a half decades, Jay Warner has been influential to the success of many singers, songwriters and musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, the late Rick James, Mariah Carey, The Rascals, Jimmy Webb, Gladys Knight and many more industry heavyweights. A six-time Grammy Award winner, Warner is a music publisher, author and music historian with a distinguished record in pop, rock, country, R&B and soul music. A recipient of the Heroes and Legends Pioneer Award as well as various ASCAP awards, Warner is the only music publisher to be included in the distinguished Congressional Record.

As a publisher, Warner is ubiquitous, publishing songs in Oscar-winning movies, winning Grammys and even tracking down funds for the estate of the late blues singer Mississippi John Hurt.

But, first and foremost, Warner is a fan of music and has focused his passion into sharing his knowledge and experience with others. As a prolific author, he has written extensively about music history and the music business. Among his books are On this Day in Music History, On This Day in Black Music History, the recently updated American Singing Groups: A History from 1940 to Today; and Just Walkin' in the Rain, his account of the the wronglyimprisoned singer Johnny Bragg and The Prisonaires, America's most-famous allconvict singing group.

Among his reference books, however, How to Have Your Hit Song Published (Hal Leonard), remains a valuable read for songwriter who wants to navigate the often-complicated path to getting published. Included are sample copies of the many forms and contracts songwriters encounter; information on how to read and understand the music trade magazines and charts; and lists of publishers, record companies and producers. The revised and updated edition is now available.
