ASCAP members Steve Vai, Jonatha Brooke speak on CCC panel on artist-run labels

Garry Schyman

Shown at the CCC panel (left to right) are ASCAP's Shawn Lemone, Steve Vai, Jonatha Brooke, ASCAP's Brendan Okrent and Cree Miller, manager to Jackson Browne and Graham Nash and co-founder of Inside Recordings

As major labels lose market share and power, it's the recording artist who has come in to take control of the business side, as well as the creative side. The California Copyright Conference (CCC) recently held a panel on the upsurge in artist-run labels. ASCAP writers Jonatha Brooke and Steve Vai were two of the panelists speaking about the benefits and drawbacks of working in a business environment run by, and more sympathetic to, music creators.
