ASCAP mourns the untimely passing of our member, Alex Chilton, the influential leader of the Power Pop band, Big Star, former lead singer of the Box Tops and a vital and innovative solo artist. The Memphis-born Chilton was the writer of “September Gurls,” “In the Street” (the theme for That 70s Show), “Thank You Friends” and “Underclass.” Chilton died suddenly in New Orleans days before a planned and much-anticipated Big Star performance at the SXSW Conference in Austin.
