The Ghent International Film Festival is one of Europe's most respected film events. Over its 37-year history, the Festival has also grown into one of the world's largest, routinely attracting over 125,000 visitors and screening over 150 films, shorts, and documentaries in and out of competition. This year's Ghent Festival will be held October 12-23rd.
One of the highlights of each Ghent Festival is the closing event, the World Soundtrack Awards. Since its inception in 2001, the Awards have honored outstanding achievements in film composing in multiple categories: Film Composer of the Year, Best Original Film Score of the Year, Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film, Discovery of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award.
To celebrate its 10th Anniversary ceremony on October 23rd, the World Soundtrack Academy has announced an all-star lineup of composers to appear live in concert at the awards presentation. Unsurprisingly, the large majority is made of ASCAP members and international affiliates. Oscar winners Howard Shore (Lord Of The Rings), Elliot Goldenthal (Frida), Gabriel Yared (The English Patient) and Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare In Love) are all confirmed to attend, as are Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks), Craig Armstrong (Love Actually), Alberto Iglesias (Todo Sobre Mi Madre), Bruno Coulais (Océans), Frédéric Devreese (Un Soir, Un Train) and Nico Muhly (The Reader).
The ceremony will include a six-minute suite from each composer, performed by the Brussels Philharmonic - the Orchestra of Flanders, conducted by Dirk Brossé, and accompanied by a selection of illustrative film excerpts.
