Memphis was the big winner at the 55th annual Drama Desk Awards, presented May 23, 2010 in the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center in New York. Set in the 1950s, the rock 'n' roll musical won four awards, including Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Music.
Each year, the Drama Desk votes special awards to recognize excellence and significant contributions to the theater. ASCAP member Jerry Herman was recognized for enchanting and dazzling audiences with his exuberant music and heartfelt lyrics for more than half a century.
Established in 1955, the Awards recognize shows produced off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway, in legitimate not-for-profit theaters, in addition to Broadway productions.
