ASCAP Composer & Lyricist George David Weiss Dies at 89


ASCAP Board member Jimmy Webb presented George David Weiss with The ASCAP Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award during a ceremony held at Lincoln Center in New York City in December 2003.

ASCAP composer and lyricist George David Weiss -- co-writer of such standards as "Can't Help Falling in Love," "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "What a Wonderful World," "Too Close for Comfort," "The Wheel of Fortune," "Lullaby of Birdland" and "That Sunday, That Summer" – died at the age of 89 in his New Jersey home of natural causes. Weiss, who wrote songs for films and the Broadway stage, was also a significant leader in efforts to protect the rights of music creators, serving as President of the Songwriters Guild of America from 1982 to 2000. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984 and was honored with The ASCAP Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.
