“On the Come Up” chats with songwriter, producer, and artist, Stan Jones about divine inspiration.

What was your first introduction into the music industry?

Stan: My first introduction into the music industry was through the great artists of Gospel music – The Winans, Commissioned and Take 6. They did music that inspired me enough to have a desire to want to be a part of it.

How did you get the opportunity to work with Yolanda Adams? And how was your experience working with her?

S: I got the opportunity to work with Yolanda Adams through one of my closest friends, Doug Williams. We went to LA together to do demos for her upcoming project. Even though every song was great, they didn’t pick one for that album. I was disappointed, but I was patient. They called me about a year later, saying the song “Hold On” would be placed on her next project and would be the lead single! The song was also featured on The Hidden Beach’s compilation CD, Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement, along with music from Kanye West, John Mayer, Stevie Wonder and several others. So things worked out very well in the end. Patience is key!

What was your inspiration for “All I Need?”

S: My inspiration for “All I Need” was a strong desire to get more out of life. Things didn’t seem to be going in the right direction and I wasn’t feeling motivated, so I needed help getting back on track. I prayed for this song, and it helped me through those times and still helps me to this day.

Are you open to performing and producing in different musical genres?

S: I’m definitely open to sharing and making great music with all that have a passion for excellent music as I do. New experiences are what keep the mind stimulated and bring forth unexpected creative flow.

What advice do you have for up-and-coming songwriters/producers/artists?

S: Stay true to the structure and force of the veterans that came before us, and work with a desire to make great music that will live beyond our years.

What are you working on, currently?

S: I’m currently working on the 50th anniversary album for the Grammy-nominated group, The Williams Brothers. I’m also working on Brian Courtney Wilson’s, Just Love deluxe album and my solo album. There are some other projects being lined up, so I’m very excited!

Where are you from, originally?

S: I’m originally from a small town – Clarksdale, Mississippi. It’s called “The Mississippi Delta,” where the Blues was born. Some of the greatest talents we know are from there, as well, such as Sam Cooke and Morgan Freeman. Humble beginnings give the option to either make it or not!
